Conservation framing is designed to provide the best possible protection for a framed work, slowing or preventing deterioration. Conservation framing techniques should be used when framing anything considered an original, a limited edition, something of historical, collectible, or sentimental value. All materials used in the framing process must meet exacting standards. Conservation framing has come a long way in the past couple of decades. Previously museum quality framing was only available at the museum or curatorial level. Today, we can provide museum quality protection, at a more economical level, to help protect your valued treasures.

There are three main components to conservation framing, matting, mounting, and glazing. First, conservation framing only uses 100% cotton rag mats manufactured to the Library of Congress standards. Such mats are bleed and fade resistant, and both acid and lignin free. Preservation mounting utilizes archival quality backing materials, combined with conservation mounting techniques. All materials used must be ph neutral and completely reversible. When artwork is framed using conservation methods, it is treated in such a way that when it is removed from the frame, it will be in the same condition it was in when it went into the frame. The last component is glazing, commonly referred to as glass. Conservation glass safeguards works against damaging ultraviolet light, blocking 97% of the harmful ultraviolet spectrum, significantly reducing fading due to light exposure.

Improper framing techniques may cause serious damage to the piece that is being framed. Commonly, cardboard is used as a backing, and is highly acidic. Also, tapes such as scotch tape is often improperly used to mount works, it is highly acidic and irreversible.
