Frank Grobelny was born in Philadelphia, PA. His earliest aspiration was to become an artist. At age 16, his drawing skills helped him secure a part time position as a technical illustrator. As a talented youth, he won a scholarship to the University of the Arts in 1959 to study illustration. While earning is B.F.A. in illustration, Frank also received the Marcel Vertes award for Best Figure Drawing. He later became a professional fashion illustrator and freelance artist.
The fluidity of Frank’s one of a kind sculptures reflect his fashion illustration background, by using the simplicity of line and exaggerated proportions. Visually, the positive and negative areas of the sculpture merge to give each piece form and movement.
The choice of copper and brass gives Frank the flexibility of color for most of his sculptures. When needed, Frank uses the plating process to create a color of his specifications.
