George Thompson received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Pratt Institute in New York and had a successful career as an editorial illustrator. He now works as a fine artist full time. He paints and draws in a traditional style. His landscapes, still lifes and portraits are noted for their lush color and life. Since moving to the area in 2000 he has been greatly influenced by the Bucks County Impressionists. Thompson has been the recipient of many prestigious awards both locally and nationally. His most recent awards being Best In Show at the 2008 Galaxy Art Show in Doylestown, PA and an award for his portrait of "Tatiana" in the 2008 Phillips Mill Annual Show. In 2006 he was recognized by The Artist's Magazine where he won an award in the portrait category of their National Competition for his painting entitled "Simon". He was also a six time finalist in the portrait, still life and landscape categories in 2006 and a five time finalist in the portrait and landscape categories for 2008.
George Thompson’s artistic ability has no limits. His talent is evident in every subject he chooses to capture. Whether he is painting or drawing, his landscapes still lifes and figurative work are not to be missed. Beginning December 5th, Radclyffe Gallery in New Hope, PA will exhibit LIFESCAPES: A Collection of Paintings and Drawings by Thompson which will include his latest figure/portrait, still life and landscape works. Thompson, a graduate of Pratt Institute and The Art Students League in New York, had been primarily a figurative painter. After moving to Bucks County 10 years ago he began to paint the local landscape. His admiration for the Bucks County Impressionists proved to be very inspiring. He has earned many awards both locally and nationally for his plein-air and studio landscapes. “Although I have been painting landscapes I have not abandoned my figurative work. Painting and drawing from a live model is a very important part of my life,” says Thompson who will have a feature article about drawing in the March 2010 issue of The Artist’s Magazine. He taught the life drawing sessions at the Society of Illustrators in New York for over 10 years, and continues to run successful weekly drawing and painting sessions in Bucks County. His figurative works range from traditional life poses to theatrically costumed models. “When it comes to my work I try not to idealize the subject and I don’t feel that my paintings have to tell a story or have a moral idea. I get inspiration from everything I see and try to depict it honestly attempting to portray the emotion and beauty of life.” “George Thompson is truly an artistic gem. It is very rare for an artist to move effortlessly from one genre to the next as George does. The diversity in subject matter will give collectors a lot to be excited about.” says Radclyffe Gallery owner, Colleen Matthews. In addition to the many prestigious awards he has been recognized by The Artist’s Magazine for the past 4 years. He has consistently won awards in the portrait/figure, landscape and still life categories of their national competitions. His work has been exhibited at the Woodmere Museum in Philadelphia, The Art Students League in New York, The Philadelphia Sketch Club and The Trenton State Museum at Ellarslie Mansion in New Jersey where he had over 30 of his figure and portrait paintings on view. He was featured on the cover of The Artist’s Magazine in the November 2007 issue and will be again featured on the cover in December 2009.
