Smita Rao is an emerging Bucks County landscape artist. Her sensitive portrayal of the woods and fields around her hilltop home are sights so pleasantly easy to connect with. Smita is a quiet, gentle woman, yet what she offers is powerful.

There is real joy to this celebration of her art. Smita has worked through a major life transition, releasing her dormant art to surface, then fought through the daunting task of learning the visual language of the new century: digital. Yet, she has remained attached to the organic solace of nature. She has simply given us another view of it, an altogether arresting view.

Gladly, Smita does not copy the style of her Bucks County predecessors. She draws on her earlier art training and brings textures of another time and culture, fusing deftly the subtleties of nature first with a lens, and then subordinates these new power tools with a sure but sensitive touch. It is important to recognize that she indeed is one of the few who are using this digital palette in the creating of images, not just scanning work done in traditional media. She then collaborates with a craftsmen printer, who also understands the nuances of the gicleé limited edition on watercolor paper. This, too, is something to celebrate, as they have achieved a benchmark.

There is a tinge of melancholy too, as her work seems to emit a soft lament for how her county, her home of many years, is changing, nature vanishing.
